The objectives of an operating system are :

  1. Providing the ‘user-friendly’ interface so that the user need not bother about the underlying hard-ware. The commands given by user in an natural language are interpreted by the operating system, which in turn uses the hardware to get the required task done.
  2. Creating an environment for other programs to be executed on the CPU, and allocating the resources to the executing program as and when required.
  3. Harnessing the full power of the machine so that user can make the best possible use of the hardware for his or her application needs.
